The World Best 10K Race originated as a celebration form of the 3rd Anniversary of the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, which began operations at the 23rd of February 1994. From its origin, it was ment to be a total commitment affair and not just a foot race. As such, it required total involvement of all sectors; business, goverment, community, news media and the sport world. It seemed the perfect way to reciprocate to our community the strong endorsement always given to our Toll Brige operation. Our first two races, in 1998 and 1999, were focus toward our local athletes. For our third race in 2000, once again we try to motivate our local athletes even further, by converting our race into an international event, and by inviting some of the best runners in the world. This was the first race in Puerto Rico to be certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS) and by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) and by the local Long Distance Running Association ("Comite de Fondismo"). It was also the first race transmitted live through Internet, with audio, video and results. We are satistied that our first international race was ranked among the 20 most competitive races in the World.

In the year 2001 the event adopted the name of World's Best 10k Race, which took place on February 18, 2001. With a Grand Prize Bonus of $100,000.00 for the athlete, man or woman, able to stablish, a new World best record, for 10 kilometers. Our 1st place prize is $20,000.00 with a time bonus of $5,000, for men under 28 minutes and women under 31 minutes. It was absolutely necessary for the Word's best runners athletes (E.g. Paul Tergat, Khalid Khannouchi, Tegla Laroupe, Lornah Kiplagat and many others) to be present at the World Best 10K.

If your organization has athletes that are of new World record potential and would be interested in coming to our beautiful Puerto Rico, please let us know. Our e-mail, telephones and fax are available for your convenience.

Our beautiful tropical Island will be the perfect host to a fantastic race. The perfect setting of a 2.5-kilometer bridge over the beautiful San Josť Lagoon that will be traversed twice, provides the unique feature of allowing the front-runners to be able to see the rear runners at least twice during the race.

I wish to take this opportunity, to congratulate the World Best 10K Organization Committee and the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge personnel for their effort, cooperation and dedication to the total success of this event. Also a recognition is extended to the Sponsors that participated in previous, events (as well as new ones) that always have believed in our vision.

Remember we have a date on February, 29 2004.

Rafael B. Acosta
